Best wishes for a Happy New Year
By SuperUser Account 06 Jan 2014
Dear IUCN National Committee UK supporters,

Best wishes for a happy new year!

2014 will be a busy year for NCUK and we welcome a new member elected to the Executive Committee (ExCo) - Kirsten Pullen, Executive Director of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria (BIAZA) – to help ExCo and IUCN NCUK Members deliver our programme.
The Annual General Meeting will take place in April 2014 (venue to be confirmed). An annual report will be produced in the next couple of months.

NCUK is a partner in the conference 'National Parks for the 21st Century' Conference in Perth on 12/13/14th May 2014 which will explore the theme ‘What is the future for the UK’s protected areas? Nigel Dudley will represent NCUK as a speaker and will provide a platform for the Putting Nature On The Map project. This conference is supported by the John Muir Trust, and the Scottish Government as part of its 'Homecoming' year.

River Restoration is a new project theme that NCUK is exploring with Prof Phil Boon at Scottish Natural Heritage and will be working with the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and consultants ECUS. A report will be produced that reviews the river restoration processes in the five countries (including the Republic of Ireland) and will produce some recommendations. An Autumn 2014 workshop event is proposed for endorsing what the contractors will have found.

The process of assigning IUCN protected area management categories to sites in the UK will be highlighted at the World Parks Congress in Sydney Australia in November 2014. The Putting Nature on the Map project will be producing a number of reports during the year for dissemination at this major, once-a-decade event.

Preparations are already under way for a major 'Environment and Development' conference at the Belfast Waterfront in Environment Week in June 2015. NCUK is working with Belfast City Council, Visit Belfast and Business in the Community and an expression of interest has been sent to IUCN to host the IUCN European Members Forum here in advance of the 2016 World Conservation Congress.

Work will continue in leading IUCN National Committee development work in the IUCN European Region with monthly teleconferences taking place.
